Dinner at 6, Queimada at 8 with Chef Carlos Rivero
What is a Queimada?
Queimada is a centuries-old tradition from Galicia in northwest Spain with Celtic roots. It is a communal, theatrical ritual in which a sweetened spirit is set aflame and slowly stirred while an incantation is spoken to ward off evil spirits and invite good fortune. The ceremony is famous for its dancing blue flame, the aroma of citrus peel and coffee, and the spellbinding chant that sets the mood.
Historically, families and friends would gather at night to prepare the potion in a clay bowl, lighting it to purify the evening and “burn” away negativity. Variations include flaming coffee poured into clay cups after the flame subsides, symbolizing protection and renewal as the night turns. The blend of warmth, spice, citrus, sugar, and coffee creates a sensory experience that feels both ancient and celebratory.
At Don Quijote, Chef Carlos Rivero brings this time-honored spectacle to Halloween night. Lights lower, the flame rises, the chant begins, and you are part of a living tradition that transforms the dining room into a truly spooky restaurant experience.
